Sutcliffe Meats is 100% Australian owned by Stephen Kelly, who has been a prominent figure in Australia’s meat industry for 40 years. The son of a 3rd generation farming family, Stephen is committed to supporting Australia’s agricultural producers in providing only the finest quality products through the Sutcliffe Meats store network.
The name Sutcliffe Meats was inspired by an entrepreneur named Thomas Sutcliffe Mort. Mort was born in Lancashire UK in 1816 and arrived in Australia in 1838. Mort was renowned for speculation in the local pastoral industry as well as industrial activities such as his ice-works in Sydney’s Darling Harbour and dry dock and engineering works at Balmain. In the 1860’s, Mort developed a large sheep and cattle abattoir in Lithgow and in 1868, he conducted the first trial shipment of frozen meat to London. Mort died in 1878 and a statue was erected in Macquarie Place in recognition of his achievements in the colony (this statue still stands today). The southern Sydney suburb of Mortdale and its main road Morts Rd are named after him.
